This page continues the patient stories from Cancer Care — honouring those who continue to thrive, those still on their journey, and those whose memory continues to inspire us.
MY SURVIVAL JOURNEY • DR DARCELLE
From JOY, through VOK, and back to hope.
At the beginning of my cancer journey, I held tightly to one little word: JOY. Three letters. A reminder to stay hopeful. A choice to look for light, even as I stepped into the uncertainty of chemotherapy.
But cancer has a way of changing the language you thought you understood. Very quickly, JOY became VOK.
VOK I didn’t understand. VOK this was hard. VOK I was afraid.
There were moments of pain, confusion and uncertainty when I didn’t know what the next day would bring. And yet, woven through those difficult moments were flickers of JOY — the hand that reached for mine, the message that arrived at exactly the right moment, the laughter in the middle of an impossible day, and the people who stayed.
I discovered that I was never truly alone. I was held by God, by my family, by my friends, and by a community that carried me when I couldn’t carry myself.
Courage does not mean being unafraid. Courage is moving forward while you are afraid.
Today, I stand not simply as a survivor, but as someone transformed by the journey. Cancer care is about far more than treating a disease. Healing is physical, emotional, spiritual and profoundly human.
So I honour every warrior. Those beginning their journey. Those in the middle of the fight. Those finding their way beyond treatment. And those whose stories live on in all of us.
OUR SURVIVORS

Heike
Physician and cancer survivor
Engaging with Darcelle was a pivotal moment in my cancer survivorship. She was warm and open, helping me to conceptualise my health and wellness going forward. She offered concrete Lifestyle medicine guidance and support, helping me to rebuild myself. I will forever be grateful.

As a fellow cancer survivor, Dr Darcelle Schouw is who I refer everyone to. She understands integrative cancer support and works alongside your oncologist. 4 years in remission. I trust her completely.

Working with Dr Darcelle Schouw has been a genuinely transformative part of my health journey. As a busy working mother and professional, managing thyroid health, borderline diabetes and life as a breast cancer survivor, I’ve searched for an approach to health that looks at the whole person not just individual diagnoses.
Dr Darce has become an important part of my health team, and her lifestyle medicine approach has been incredible. What I value most is not only her professional guidance and evidence-based support, but the permission it gives me to prioritise myself and fill my own cup where it really counts.
Her empathetic manner and naturally positive, supportive approach make such a difference. I never feel judged or overwhelmed, instead, I feel listened to, encouraged and empowered to make changes that are realistic for my life.
Dr Darce has helped me understand that looking after my health isn't another thing to add to an already busy life. It is the foundation that allows me to live that life well. I’m incredibly grateful to have her in my corner.
IN LOVING MEMORY • FUZZ SINCLAIR
Dala What You Must.
Who fought the bravest fight, loved Nashah her son with her life. Fuzz reminds us to Dala What You Must to get well.
Fuzlin was a woman of quiet strength, deep love, and unwavering devotion to those closest to her. She was the youngest in our family but stood out as our natural protector — steady, reliable, and always there when it mattered most.
She lived with warmth and intention, expressing her care through the way she showed up for others, especially as a deeply devoted mother to her son, who was her whole world. Even in the face of life’s hardest challenges, she carried herself with grace and courage.
Fuzlin will be remembered for her gentle strength, her love for making things beautiful, her generous heart, and the lasting legacy she leaves behind. We miss you sis #4eva45 🌸
IN LOVING MEMORY • MARIA
Strength, resilience and sacrifice.
Maria, a vibrant soul who taught us what it means to live fully. A mother, teacher, and friend who inspires others with her unstoppable joy and determination.
Writing about my beloved would clearly fill an entire book. Maria da Graça was an incredible mother, wife, and human being from the very first day I met her. She was a true warrior in bringing our children into the world, caring for her siblings, and looking after her own parents.
Even in her final days, she was still worried about everyone around her, always trying to solve problems. I always called her my fighter, my general, because life was never easy for her. Yet, despite carrying a million burdens on her shoulders, she remained kind, joyful, and full of warmth.
She loved dancing, organizing events, and spending time with the people she loved. Maria was, is, and always will be a name that represents strength, resilience, and sacrifice.
She gave everything of herself to build our family. She helped me build our very first home — she would come with me to the construction site and cook for everyone working there. I honestly do not know what would have become of me all these years without my beloved wife.
We each have our JOY. We each have our VOK moments. But we also have one another.
